Why Is My AC Not Cooling in McAllen? 7 Causes and What to Check
AC running but not cooling your McAllen home? Here are the seven most common causes, which ones you can check yourself, and when to stop and call a technician.

If your air conditioner is running but your McAllen home is not getting cool, you are dealing with one of a fairly short list of causes. Some of them you can check in five minutes without tools. Others need a technician with gauges and a meter.
This guide walks through all seven in the order a technician would check them, so you can rule out the free fixes before paying for a service call.
Start here: two checks that cost nothing
Before anything else, do these two things.
Check the air filter. Pull it out and hold it up to a light. If you cannot see light through it, it is restricting airflow badly enough to cause exactly the symptom you are describing. In McAllen, a one inch filter can close up in as little as three or four weeks during dusty stretches, which is much faster than the packaging suggests.
Look at the outdoor unit. Walk outside while the system is calling for cooling. The large fan on top of the outdoor unit should be spinning, and you should hear the compressor running. If the fan is still, or if you hear a hum with no movement, stop reading and call. That is an electrical fault and it is not something to troubleshoot yourself.
1. Clogged air filter
This is the single most common cause we find, and it is the cheapest to fix.
A restricted filter starves the evaporator coil of the warm air it needs to absorb heat from. The coil gets colder and colder until it drops below freezing, and then ice forms on it. Once that happens, airflow stops almost entirely, and the vents blow next to nothing.
What to do: Replace the filter. If you find ice on the coil or on the copper line outside, switch the thermostat to off but set the fan to on. That circulates room temperature air across the coil and thaws it, usually in two to four hours. Do not try to chip the ice off.
2. Frozen evaporator coil
Ice on the indoor coil or on the large copper line running to the outdoor unit means one of two things: airflow is restricted, or the refrigerant charge is low.
Restricted airflow comes from a dirty filter, a blocked return grille, closed supply registers, a dirty blower wheel, or crushed ductwork. Low refrigerant comes from a leak, because refrigerant is a sealed loop and is not consumed in normal operation.
What to do: Thaw it as described above, replace the filter, and open every supply register in the house. If it freezes again within a day or two, the cause is not airflow and you need a leak found.
3. Failed capacitor
The capacitor is a cylindrical component inside the outdoor unit that gives the compressor and fan motor the surge they need to start. Heat is hard on capacitors, and in a climate where the outdoor unit sits in 100 degree air for eight months a year, they are a wear item rather than a lifetime part.
The classic symptom is a humming outdoor unit with a fan that will not turn.
What to do: Call. Capacitors store a substantial electrical charge even after power is disconnected, and they can deliver a serious shock. This is a quick and inexpensive repair for a technician and a genuinely dangerous one for a homeowner.
4. Low refrigerant from a leak
A system low on refrigerant cannot absorb enough heat. It runs constantly, cools poorly, and often ices up. Left alone long enough, it damages the compressor.
The important point: refrigerant does not get used up. If your system is low, it leaked, and adding more without finding the leak means paying for the same refrigerant again next season.
What to do: Have the leak found and repaired. If your system uses R-22, which was phased out of production in 2020, get a replacement quote at the same time. R-22 is expensive and increasingly difficult to source.
5. Dirty condenser coil
The outdoor coil is where your house's heat gets dumped into the outside air. When it is packed with dust, grass clippings, cottonwood, or dryer lint, it cannot reject heat efficiently. Head pressure climbs, capacity drops, and the compressor runs hot.
In the Rio Grande Valley this is a yearly maintenance item, not a once in a decade one. Our dust load is heavy enough to noticeably foul a coil in a single season.
What to do: With the breaker off, rinse the coil gently with a garden hose, spraying from the inside out so debris is pushed back the way it came. Do not use a pressure washer, which bends the fins flat and makes the problem permanently worse. Keep at least two feet of clearance around the unit.
6. Duct leakage into the attic
This one is invisible, which is why it goes undiagnosed for years.
Typical residential duct systems lose 20 to 30 percent of their air to leaks. In McAllen that matters more than the percentage suggests, because our attics regularly exceed 130 degrees in July. Supply leaks dump cooled air into that space, and return leaks pull the superheated attic air into the system. Both sides of the loss compound.
Signs: rooms that never cool, dust reappearing a day after cleaning, high bills relative to the equipment's age, and a system that runs nearly continuously.
What to do: Have static pressure measured and the accessible attic runs inspected. Duct sealing is frequently a better use of money than upgrading equipment.
7. The system is simply undersized or failing
If everything above checks out and the system still cannot keep up on a 102 degree afternoon, you may be looking at equipment that is either undersized for the house or worn to the point that it no longer delivers its rated capacity.
Systems in the Valley typically last 10 to 15 years, shorter than the national average because of the run hours. A 14 year old system that has started struggling is usually telling you something.
When to stop troubleshooting and call
Call rather than continuing to investigate if any of these apply:
- You smell burning, hot plastic, or an electrical odor
- A breaker trips again immediately after you reset it
- The outdoor unit hums but the fan does not turn
- Water is dripping through a ceiling
- The indoor temperature is above 80 degrees and an infant, an older adult, or someone with a heart or lung condition is in the home
That last one is not a comfort threshold. Indoor heat exposure during a Valley summer is a genuine medical risk.
The short version
Check the filter and look at the outdoor fan. Those two checks resolve or explain a large share of no cool calls. Everything past that point involves refrigerant, live electrical components, or measurements, and it is worth having someone with gauges look at it before a small problem takes out a compressor.
