Ice on Your AC? Why Coils Freeze and How to Thaw One Safely
Ice on the refrigerant line or indoor coil means restricted airflow or low refrigerant. Here is how to thaw it safely and what has to be fixed afterward.

Finding ice on an air conditioner in 100 degree weather feels like a contradiction, but it is one of the more common calls we run in the Valley.
Here is what it means, how to clear it safely, and what has to happen afterward so it does not come straight back.
What ice actually tells you
Your evaporator coil, the indoor coil, is supposed to run cold, typically around 40 degrees. Warm humid air passes across it, heat transfers into the refrigerant, and moisture condenses out and drains away.
Ice forms when the coil drops below 32 degrees. Condensate freezes on the surface instead of draining, the ice blocks airflow, less warm air reaches the coil, so it gets colder still, and more ice forms. It compounds until the coil is a solid block.
There are only two root causes:
- Not enough warm air reaching the coil. Restricted airflow.
- Not enough refrigerant in the system. A leak.
Everything else on the list below is a version of one of those two.
Thaw it first, safely
Step 1: Set cooling to OFF at the thermostat.
Continuing to run it makes the ice worse and risks liquid refrigerant returning to the compressor, which is designed to compress vapor. That causes real mechanical damage.
Step 2: Set the fan to ON.
This is the part people miss. Running the blower circulates room temperature air across the frozen coil and thaws it far faster than simply turning the whole system off. Expect two to four hours, occasionally longer for a badly iced coil.
Step 3: Put towels down.
All that ice becomes water. The drain pan handles some of it, but a heavily iced coil often produces more than the pan and drain can take at once.
Step 4: Replace the filter and open all supply registers.
If restricted airflow caused it, fixing that now means the system may run normally when you restart it.
What not to do while thawing
- Do not pour hot water on the coil. Thermal shock can damage it, and water reaching electrical components is a genuine hazard.
- Do not chip or scrape the ice. Coil tubing is thin and punctures easily, turning a repair into a much larger repair.
- Do not use a hair dryer or heat gun in an enclosed air handler.
- Do not restart cooling until every trace of ice is gone. Restarting on a partially frozen coil refreezes it immediately.
Then find out why
Once it is thawed, restart cooling and watch it. What happens next tells you which of the two root causes you have.
If it runs normally and stays clear
The cause was almost certainly airflow, and the filter change fixed it. Keep an eye on it for a week.
Airflow restrictions to check for:
- Clogged filter. The most common cause by far. In the Valley a one inch filter can close up in three or four weeks during dusty stretches.
- Filter that is too dense. A high MERV one inch filter has very little surface area and restricts airflow substantially. If you want high filtration, use a deep media cabinet instead.
- Closed or blocked supply registers. Closing vents in unused rooms does not save money and it does raise static pressure. Open them.
- Blocked return grille. Furniture, curtains, or a rug in front of a return starves the system.
- Dirty blower wheel. Caked with dust, it moves substantially less air. This needs cleaning by a technician.
- Crushed or disconnected ductwork. Common in attics where flex duct has been laid across joists or compressed by stored items.
- Undersized return. Common in older Valley homes where cooling capacity was increased over the decades but the return path never was. Diagnosed by measuring static pressure.
If it freezes again within a day or two
The cause is refrigerant, and you need a technician.
A system low on refrigerant runs at lower pressure, which means a lower evaporating temperature, which means the coil drops below freezing even with perfectly good airflow.
Important point: refrigerant is a sealed loop and is not consumed in normal operation. If your system is low, it leaked. Adding refrigerant without repairing the leak means paying for the same refrigerant again next season, and running low on charge shortens compressor life.
Ask for the leak to be located and repaired, not just topped off. If your system uses R-22, which was phased out of production in 2020, get a replacement quote at the same time, because R-22 is expensive and increasingly hard to source.
Less common causes
- Failed blower motor or capacitor, so the blower runs slowly or not at all
- Metering device failure, a stuck or failed TXV or restricted orifice
- Running the system when it is genuinely cool outside, below roughly 60 degrees, which most residential systems are not designed for
Why this is common in the Valley
Both root causes are amplified here.
Airflow: our dust load closes filters faster than the packaging suggests, and older housing stock across McAllen, Pharr, Donna, and Harlingen commonly has undersized returns that leave the blower fighting high static pressure permanently.
Refrigerant: salt bearing air off the Gulf accelerates coil corrosion, particularly in Cameron County, and corrosion related coil leaks are the most common refrigerant loss mechanism in the coastal cities.
Add run hours two to three times the national average and small problems reach the freezing threshold faster.
Preventing it
- Check the filter monthly, replace every 30 to 60 days for a one inch filter
- Do not use a filter denser than your system was designed for
- Keep all supply registers open and return grilles clear
- Have static pressure measured once, so you know whether your duct system is a limiting factor
- Fix slow refrigerant leaks rather than topping them off annually
- Get a spring tune up so charge and airflow are verified before the season

That last row is worth noting. A heat pump forming frost on the outdoor coil in winter and then steaming during defrost is behaving correctly, not malfunctioning.
The short version
Ice means airflow or refrigerant. Turn cooling off, set the fan to ON, change the filter, and wait two to four hours. If it runs fine afterward it was airflow. If it freezes again within days, you have a leak that needs finding rather than a system that needs topping off.
