AC Not Turning On At All? Work Through This Before You Call

A methodical checklist for an air conditioner that is completely dead, covering thermostat, breakers, disconnects, float switches, and the service door switch.

A completely dead air conditioner feels worse than one that runs poorly, but it is often a simpler problem. Several of the most common causes are switches that are doing exactly what they were designed to do.

Work through this list in order before calling. It takes about ten minutes and it resolves a meaningful share of no power calls.

1. The thermostat

Is it set to COOL? Not OFF, not HEAT, not FAN ONLY. This gets bumped more often than people admit, especially with children or guests in the house.

Is the target below room temperature? If the room is 78 and the thermostat is set to 80, the system is correctly doing nothing.

Is the screen on? A blank display on a battery powered thermostat usually means dead batteries. Most take two AA or AAA cells and take a minute to change.

Does it have power but no response? Try turning the fan to ON. If the blower runs, the thermostat has power and the problem is in the cooling call or in the outdoor unit. If nothing happens at all, the air handler has no power.

Recently installed smart thermostat? These need continuous power, usually from a C wire. A thermostat installed without one can behave erratically or die intermittently as it drains the system trying to charge itself.

2. Both circuit breakers

Air conditioning systems normally have two breakers, and people frequently check only one.

  • The outdoor unit breaker, usually a double pole breaker rated 30 to 60 amps
  • The indoor air handler breaker, usually a single pole 15 to 20 amp, or a double pole if there are electric heat strips

A tripped breaker often sits in a middle position between ON and OFF rather than clearly off. To reset it, push it firmly all the way to OFF first, then firmly to ON. Simply nudging it toward ON does not reset the mechanism.

Important: if the breaker trips again immediately after you reset it, stop. Leave it off and call. A breaker that trips repeatedly is telling you there is a short or a motor drawing too much current, and forcing it back on is a genuine fire risk.

3. The outdoor disconnect

There is usually a small grey box mounted on the exterior wall within sight of the outdoor unit. Inside is either a pull out block or a switch.

This is required by code so a technician can safely de-energize the unit. It sometimes gets pulled and not replaced, or it gets bumped.

Open the cover and confirm the pull out block is fully seated, or the switch is in the ON position.

If you find one of the two blades on a pull out block is burned or discolored, do not reinstall it. Call.

4. The indoor service switch

This one catches people constantly.

Near the indoor air handler, often on a wall or on the unit itself, there is frequently a switch that looks exactly like a normal light switch. In attics, garages, and closets it gets flipped by accident, or turned off by someone assuming it controls a light.

Find it and confirm it is on.

5. The condensate float switch

This is the most common cause of an air conditioner that appears completely dead when the electrical supply is fine.

Your system produces several gallons of condensate a day in Valley humidity. When the drain line blocks with algae, the pan fills. A float switch in the pan or in the drain line then cuts power to the system, deliberately, to prevent water reaching your ceiling.

Check for it: look for standing water in the drain pan under the indoor coil, or in a secondary pan beneath the unit. Look for a small plastic device in the pan or spliced into the drain line with two wires running from it.

Clear it: take a wet/dry vacuum to the outdoor end of the drain line, seal the hose over the pipe, and run it for two or three minutes to pull the blockage out. Then pour about a cup of distilled white vinegar into the drain line access near the indoor unit.

Once the water drains, the switch resets and the system runs again.

Prevent it: repeat the vinegar step every two months during cooling season. This is the single most valuable five minute maintenance task available to a Rio Grande Valley homeowner.

6. The blower door safety switch

Many air handlers have a safety switch that cuts power when the access panel is removed, so the blower cannot run with the compartment open.

If someone recently changed a filter or opened the unit and did not seat the panel correctly, this switch stays open and the system stays dead.

Check that all access panels are properly closed and secured.

7. Low voltage fuse

Control boards usually have a small fuse, commonly a 3 or 5 amp automotive style blade fuse, protecting the low voltage control circuit.

If it has blown, the thermostat may be completely dead even though both breakers are on.

This one is worth mentioning to the technician rather than pursuing yourself, because a blown fuse means something caused it, usually a short in the thermostat wiring, and replacing the fuse without finding the short just blows another one.

When to stop and call

Call rather than continuing if:

  • A breaker trips again immediately after being reset
  • You see burned, discolored, or melted components anywhere
  • You smell burning or anything electrical
  • The disconnect block shows heat damage
  • You have worked through everything above and the system is still dead
  • The float switch trips again quickly after clearing the drain

What the technician will check

Beyond the list above, a diagnosis for a dead system looks at:

  • Voltage at the disconnect and at the unit
  • The contactor, both its coil and its contacts
  • The transformer that supplies 24 volt control power
  • The control board and its fuse
  • The thermostat wiring for shorts or breaks
  • Capacitors, since a failed one can prevent startup entirely
  • High and low pressure safety switches, which lock the system out when tripped

Ask what the reading was, not just what the part was. A part replaced without understanding what caused it to fail tends to fail again.
