Low refrigerant from a leak
Refrigerant is not consumed the way fuel is. If a system is low, it leaked. We find and repair the leak rather than simply adding refrigerant, because a top off without a repair means paying for the same refrigerant again next season.
Failed capacitor or contactor
Heat is the enemy of both. In a climate where the outdoor unit sits in 100 degree air for months, these are wear items. A weak capacitor makes the compressor work harder for months before it fails outright, quietly raising your electric bill the whole time.
Dirty condenser coil
The outdoor coil rejects heat to the air. When it is packed with dust, cottonwood, grass clippings, or dryer lint, it cannot. Head pressure rises, efficiency drops, and the compressor runs hot. Valley dust makes this a yearly issue, not a once a decade one.
Blocked condensate drain

Failing compressor
