Heat pump reversing valve or defrost fault

Cracked heat exchanger

Why does my heater smell like burning when I first turn it on?
Dust settles on the heat exchanger or heat strips over eight or nine months of not running, and it burns off the first time the system fires. The smell should fade within about 20 minutes. If it persists, smells like burning plastic or electrical components, or is accompanied by smoke, shut the system off and call.
Why does my heat pump blow air that feels cool?
Heat pump supply air is typically in the 85 to 95 degree range, which is warmer than the room but cooler than your skin at roughly 98 degrees, so it can feel cool at the vent even while it is heating the house correctly. That is normal. If the house is not actually warming up, or the system is running in defrost repeatedly, then there is a real problem.
