How to Choose an Air Filter: MERV Ratings Explained
Which MERV rating to use, why a higher number is not always better, and how often to change filters in the dusty Rio Grande Valley.

The air filter is the cheapest part of your HVAC system and one of the few things a homeowner controls directly. It is also the part where well meaning upgrades most often cause problems.
Here is how to choose one properly.
What MERV actually measures
MERV stands for Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value. It rates how effectively a filter captures particles in specific size ranges, on a scale from 1 to 16 for residential and commercial filters.
Higher numbers capture smaller particles:

You will also see MPR and FPR ratings on retail packaging. Those are manufacturer specific scales, not industry standards. MERV is the one to compare against.
Why higher is not automatically better
This is where most people go wrong, and it costs real money.
Filtration and airflow trade against each other. A denser filter captures more, and it also resists airflow more.
Your HVAC system was designed around a specific amount of airflow across the coil. Restrict that airflow and several things happen:
- The blower works harder, drawing more current and wearing faster
- Less air crosses the evaporator coil, which cuts cooling capacity
- The coil gets colder than intended, and can drop below freezing
- A frozen coil stops cooling entirely and can send liquid refrigerant back to the compressor
We have found systems frozen solid in July for no reason other than a homeowner installing the highest MERV one inch filter on the shelf, believing they were doing the right thing.
The surface area solution
Here is the part that resolves the tradeoff.
Resistance to airflow depends on both density and surface area. A one inch filter has very little surface area, so making it denser hits the airflow limit quickly.
A four or five inch deep pleated media filter has several times the surface area of a one inch filter of the same face dimensions. That means it can be MERV 13 and still present less resistance than a MERV 11 one inch filter.
So if you want serious filtration, the answer is not a denser thin filter. It is a deep media cabinet.
Installing one requires a technician to fit the cabinet at the air handler. It is a modest one time cost, and it also solves the filter change frequency problem, since deep media filters typically last six to twelve months instead of one.
What to use
Most homes: MERV 11 to 13. Good capture of pollen, dust, pet dander, and mold spores, with acceptable airflow in most systems.
Allergies or asthma in the house: MERV 13, in a deep media cabinet. This is where the cabinet genuinely earns its cost.
Older systems, or systems already running high static pressure: MERV 8 to 11 until the underlying airflow problem is addressed. Adding filtration on top of an already restricted system makes things worse.
Never: a MERV 16 one inch filter in a residential system. That combination is a frozen coil waiting to happen.
The bypass problem nobody mentions
A filter only works if all the air goes through it.
In many systems the filter sits in a slot or cabinet with visible gaps around the edges, and air takes the easy route around the media rather than through it. When that happens, upgrading from MERV 8 to MERV 13 changes almost nothing, because a large share of the air never touches the filter.
Check yours: pull the filter and look at the slot. Are there gaps at the sides or top? Does the filter fit loosely? Is there dust on the clean side of the filter, or on the blower wheel? Dust downstream of the filter means air is bypassing it.
Fix it: seal gaps with foil tape, or install a properly gasketed media cabinet.
This is the single most common reason filtration upgrades disappoint.
Change frequency in the Valley
Standard packaging says 90 days. That guidance assumes a temperate climate and average dust.
In the Rio Grande Valley:
- One inch filter: check monthly, replace every 30 to 60 days. Closer to 30 during dusty stretches, with pets, near open agricultural land, or near active construction.
- Four or five inch media filter: six to twelve months, depending on conditions.
Two local factors drive this. Our systems run two to three times the hours of the national average, so more air passes through the filter. And our airborne dust and caliche load is heavier than most of the country.
Homes in Pharr near the bridge corridor, in Donna near open fields, and in the north McAllen and Edinburg construction corridors all load filters faster than average.
Set a phone reminder. Nobody remembers otherwise, and a forgotten filter is the most common cause of the frozen coil calls we run.
Installing it correctly
Direction matters. Every filter has an arrow printed on the frame indicating airflow direction. It should point toward the blower and away from the return grille. Installed backward, the filter's structural support faces the wrong way and it can collapse.
Size matters. The size printed on the frame is nominal. A 16x25x1 filter actually measures closer to 15.5 by 24.5 inches. Use the printed nominal size when buying and it will fit.
Do not run without one. Even briefly. Dust goes straight onto the evaporator coil, where it is far harder and more expensive to remove.
Filter types
Fiberglass, the flat blue ones. MERV 1 to 4. They protect the equipment from large debris and capture very little else. Cheap, and appropriate only if your sole goal is keeping lint out of the blower.
Pleated. The standard choice. Available across the MERV range. Good value.
Washable. Usually equivalent to a low MERV rating, so equipment protection rather than air quality. They must be completely dry before reinstalling, since a damp filter in Valley humidity becomes a growth site. Generally we do not recommend them here.
Electrostatic. Marketing claims vary widely. Check the MERV rating, which is the comparable number.
HEPA. True HEPA filters are far too restrictive for a standard residential air handler. HEPA belongs in a portable room unit or in a dedicated bypass system, not in your return grille.

The short version
MERV 11 to 13 for most homes. Do not put a dense one inch filter in a system that was not designed for it. Check that air is not bypassing around the filter, because that undoes any upgrade. And check it monthly here, because Valley conditions load filters far faster than the box suggests.
