What temperature to set your thermostat in the Rio Grande Valley, how much setback actually saves, and why turning the AC off completely backfires here.

Thermostat advice on the internet is written for a national audience. In the Rio Grande Valley, where cooling runs eight months a year and humidity rarely breaks, some of that advice is actively wrong.

Here is what actually works here.

The number: 76 to 78 degrees

Most Valley households settle somewhere between 76 and 78 degrees while home. That range is not arbitrary. It sits at the point where most people are comfortable and where the system is not being asked to fight physics.

Every degree lower increases run time noticeably in this climate, and the increase is not linear. Going from 78 to 76 costs more than going from 80 to 78, because the system is working against a larger temperature difference for longer.

The Department of Energy commonly cites 78 degrees as the efficient setting. That is a reasonable target here, and many households find 76 more comfortable without a dramatic cost difference.

Why 72 degrees often does not work

Residential air conditioners are sized to produce roughly a 20 to 25 degree difference between outdoor and indoor temperature.

On a 102 degree McAllen afternoon, that math puts the realistic floor somewhere around 77 to 82 degrees indoors. If you set the thermostat to 72, the system will run continuously, never satisfy, and cost a great deal without ever reaching the number.

This is worth understanding, because it is frequently mistaken for a broken air conditioner. A system that cannot hit 72 on the hottest day of the year is usually behaving normally. A system that cannot hit 78 is not.

Use ceiling fans, but only in occupied rooms

A ceiling fan does not cool a room. It moves air across your skin, which speeds evaporation and makes you feel roughly three to four degrees cooler than the thermometer reads.

The practical consequence: with fans running, many people are comfortable at 78 where they would have wanted 75. That is a genuine saving.

The other practical consequence: a fan running in an empty room is pure waste. It cools nobody and the motor adds a small amount of heat. Turn them off when you leave the room.

Set fans to spin counterclockwise in summer, which pushes air downward and creates the breeze effect.

Setback: four to six degrees, not off

This is where standard advice goes wrong for the Valley.

In a dry climate, turning the AC off while you are out is reasonable. Here it backfires for two reasons.

Thermal mass. A house allowed to reach the mid nineties does not just have hot air in it. The drywall, framing, flooring, and furniture have all absorbed heat. Cooling the air takes minutes. Pulling the heat back out of the structure takes hours of full capacity run time, and that recovery often costs more than the setback saved.

Humidity. This is the bigger issue. While the system is off, indoor relative humidity climbs. Above 60 percent, mold and dust mites thrive. Come home to a 95 degree house at 70 percent humidity a few times a summer and you are creating conditions for problems that cost far more than electricity.

Four to six degrees of setback captures most of the available saving without either problem. If you keep 76 at home, set 80 to 82 while out.

Program it around your actual schedule

The saving comes from not cooling an empty house, which means the schedule has to match reality.

A workable Valley weekday schedule:

  • Morning, while getting ready: 76
  • Away hours: 80 to 82
  • Roughly 30 minutes before you get home: back to 76
  • Evening: 76
  • Overnight: 76 to 78

That overnight number surprises people. In dry climates, deep overnight setback works well. Here, humidity keeps building overnight, and many households find they sleep better with the system holding a steady number than swinging.

A smart thermostat handles the pre-cooling automatically using geofencing or learned patterns, which is genuinely useful when your schedule varies.

If you have a heat pump, one important caution

Heat pump thermostats need to be configured so auxiliary electric heat only engages when it genuinely should. Misconfigured, the heat strips run alongside the heat pump constantly, and you pay resistance heat prices all winter without any indication that it is happening.

This is the single most common problem we find on self installed smart thermostats. If your winter bills jumped after a thermostat change, this is the first thing to check.

Also avoid large setbacks on a heat pump in winter, because recovering a big temperature swing is exactly what triggers the auxiliary heat you are trying to avoid.

Small things that let you sit higher

These reduce the load enough that a higher setpoint feels the same:

  • Close blinds and curtains on the south and west sides during the afternoon. Solar gain through glass is one of the largest loads on a Valley home.
  • Run bathroom exhaust fans during and after showers so that moisture leaves rather than becoming your air conditioner's problem.
  • Use the range hood when cooking, particularly anything on the stovetop for a long time.
  • Do laundry and run the dishwasher in the evening, so their heat and moisture are not added at peak load.
  • Keep interior doors open so return air can move. A closed bedroom with a single supply and no return path pressurizes and stops getting air.

The one setting that costs people money silently

Check whether your fan is set to AUTO or ON.

On AUTO, the blower runs only when the system is cooling. On ON, it runs continuously.

In a humid climate, leaving it ON is a real problem. After the compressor stops, the evaporator coil is still wet with condensate. Continuous fan operation blows air across that wet coil and evaporates the moisture straight back into your house. You end up re-humidifying the home you just paid to dehumidify.

Set it to AUTO.

The short version

76 to 78 while home, four to six degrees of setback while away, fans in occupied rooms only, fan switch on AUTO, and blinds closed on the sunny side in the afternoon. Do not turn the system off entirely, and do not expect 72 degrees on a 102 degree day.
