What Your AC Noises Mean: A Sound by Sound Guide
Buzzing, clicking, screeching, banging, or gurgling? Here is what each air conditioner noise usually means and which ones mean shut it off right now.

Air conditioners make noise. The useful skill is telling normal noise from a warning, because some of these mean shut it off right now and some mean nothing at all.
Here is a sound by sound guide.
Shut it off now
Screeching or squealing
Likely cause: a failing motor bearing, most often in the outdoor fan motor or the indoor blower. On older belt driven equipment it can be a slipping belt.
Why to stop: a seizing bearing generates heat and eventually locks. When a fan motor seizes with the compressor still running, the system loses its ability to reject heat and the compressor overheats. A moderate repair becomes a major one.
What to do: shut the system off at the thermostat and call.
Grinding
Likely cause: metal on metal contact. Failed bearings, or a fan blade striking something.
Why to stop: grinding is active destruction. Every minute of running makes it worse.
What to do: shut it off and call.
Loud metallic banging or clanking
Likely cause: a loose or broken part inside the compressor, or a fan blade that has come loose and is striking the housing.
Why to stop: loose metal inside a compressor destroys it quickly. A loose fan blade can break free entirely.
What to do: shut it off and call.
Any noise plus a burning smell
Likely cause: an electrical fault or a seizing motor drawing excessive current.
What to do: shut the system off at the thermostat and at the breaker. Do not restart it to see whether it happens again. Call.
Call soon, but not an emergency
Humming from the outdoor unit with no fan movement
Likely cause: a failed run capacitor. This is the most common electrical failure we see in the Valley, because sustained heat is what kills capacitors and our outdoor units sit in 100 degree air for eight months a year.
The compressor and fan are trying to start and cannot, which is the source of the hum.
Why not to wait: a motor that is being energized but cannot turn is drawing locked rotor current and heating rapidly.
What to do: shut the system off and call. Do not open the unit. Capacitors store a substantial charge even after power is disconnected and can deliver a serious shock.
Repeated clicking with no start
Likely cause: a failing contactor, a control board fault, or a safety switch preventing startup.
What to do: check that the filter is clean and there is no water in the drain pan, since a tripped float switch produces exactly this behavior. Then call.
Buzzing
Likely cause: several possibilities. Loose electrical connections, a contactor chattering, a fan blade slightly out of balance, refrigerant flow noise, or debris caught in the outdoor unit.
What to do: with the breaker off, look inside the outdoor unit for obvious debris such as sticks or plastic caught in the fan. If nothing is visible, have it diagnosed. Loose electrical connections generate heat and are worth catching early.
Rattling
Likely cause: usually the least serious noise on this list. Loose panel screws, twigs in the outdoor unit, or a fan blade slightly loose on its shaft. Occasionally it is early bearing wear.
What to do: with the breaker off, check that the access panel screws are tight and clear any debris. If it persists, have it looked at.
Whistling from vents or the return grille
Likely cause: high static pressure. Air moving too fast through a restricted path, usually caused by a clogged filter, a filter too dense for the system, closed supply registers, or an undersized return.
What to do: change the filter and open every supply register. If it continues, have static pressure measured. High static pressure is the underlying cause of a surprising number of other complaints.
A gradually louder outdoor unit
Likely cause: wear. Bearings drying out, a fan blade slowly going out of balance, or vibration isolation pads compressed flat over the years.
What to do: mention it at your next tune up. It is not urgent, but it is a signal worth tracking.
Usually normal
A single click at startup and shutdown
The contactor engaging and releasing. Normal.
Gurgling or quiet bubbling
Usually refrigerant moving through the metering device, or condensate draining. Normal.
If the gurgling is loud and persistent it can indicate low refrigerant, so mention it if it is new or has become noticeable.
A whoosh when the blower starts
Air beginning to move. Normal.
A brief change in pitch as the compressor starts
Normal. Modern variable capacity systems also change pitch as they ramp up and down through the day, which is the system working as designed rather than a fault.
Outdoor unit steaming in winter, with a change in sound
If you have a heat pump, this is a defrost cycle melting frost off the outdoor coil. It lasts a few minutes and it is normal, though it surprises people the first time.
Popping or ticking from the ductwork
Sheet metal expanding and contracting as air temperature changes. Common at startup and shutdown, and generally harmless, though badly supported ducts make it louder.

Why noise problems are common here
Two Valley specific factors:
Run hours. Our systems run two to three times the annual hours of the national average, so bearings, blades, and mounts accumulate wear roughly three times as fast.
Heat. Sustained high temperature is what kills capacitors, and capacitor failure is the source of the most common noise complaint we get, the hum with no fan movement.
Both of these are the same reason annual maintenance matters more here: a bearing starting to dry out or a capacitor drifting below its rated value are both findable before they become a noise.
The short version
Screeching, grinding, banging, and anything accompanied by a burning smell mean shut it off. A hum with no fan movement is almost certainly a capacitor and needs attention today. Whistling means check your filter. Gurgling, single clicks, and duct popping are normal. When in doubt, a new noise on an old system is worth a phone call.
