9 Signs Your AC Needs Replacement, Not Another Repair
How to tell when repairing your air conditioner stops making financial sense, with the age, refrigerant, and repair cost thresholds that actually matter.

There is a point where continuing to repair an air conditioner stops being the frugal choice and starts being the expensive one. Finding that point takes an honest look at four things: the age of the equipment, what specifically failed, what refrigerant it uses, and what it has been costing to run.
Here are the nine signs that you have crossed it.
1. The system is over 12 years old
Air conditioners in the Rio Grande Valley typically last 10 to 15 years. That is shorter than the 15 to 20 years quoted nationally, and the reason is run hours. A Valley system may run three times as many hours per year as the same equipment installed in a temperate climate, so a 12 year old system here has accumulated wear comparable to a 20 year old system elsewhere.
Age alone is not a reason to replace. Age plus a significant repair is.
2. The compressor has failed
The compressor is the single most expensive component in the system. When it fails on equipment that is past 10 years old, the cost of replacing it usually approaches a meaningful fraction of a new system that comes with a fresh warranty and substantially better efficiency.
Get both numbers before deciding. If the compressor replacement is 40 percent of a new system on a 13 year old unit, the new system is almost always the better buy.
3. It uses R-22 refrigerant
This one is close to decisive.
R-22 production and import in the United States ended in 2020. The only remaining supply is reclaimed refrigerant, which is limited and expensive, and it gets more so every year. An R-22 system that develops a leak is generally not worth repairing.
If yours is not leaking, it can keep running. But it is worth budgeting for replacement on your own schedule rather than being forced into it during a July heat wave.
Not sure what you have? Check the nameplate on the outdoor unit. It will say R-22 or R-410A. Systems installed before roughly 2010 are commonly R-22.
4. You have paid for two or more repairs in two years
One repair is an event. Two in two years is a pattern, and the pattern rarely reverses. Components in a system age together, so once things start failing, more things follow.
Add up what you have spent over the last 24 months. If it is approaching a quarter of what a new system costs, you are financing a replacement in the least efficient way possible.
5. Electric bills are climbing with no change in usage
An aging system drifts below its original efficiency rating. Coils foul, refrigerant charge drifts, motors draw more current, and duct connections loosen. None of it announces itself. It just shows up as a bill that is 15 percent higher than last year for the same weather.
Compare this July to last July, adjusting roughly for rate changes. A steady year over year climb is the system telling you something.
6. Some rooms never get comfortable
If a room has always been hot, that is usually a duct problem and worth fixing directly.
If rooms that used to be fine have gradually stopped keeping up, that is capacity loss, and capacity loss on aging equipment is a replacement signal.
7. The house is cold but feels clammy
This is the humidity signature, and in our climate it matters as much as temperature.
An oversized system, or one whose blower speed is set too high, satisfies the thermostat quickly and shuts off before it has run long enough to pull moisture out of the air. You get the right temperature and the wrong humidity, which feels worse than a slightly warmer house at 50 percent relative humidity.
If this has been true since the system was installed, it was sized wrong. Replacement with correctly sized equipment is the fix, and no repair will produce it.
8. A coil is leaking and out of warranty
Evaporator and condenser coil replacement is a large enough job that it deserves a side by side comparison against a new system. Coil corrosion is common in the Valley, and it is worse in the coastal cities where salt bearing air reaches the equipment.
If the coil is out of warranty and the system is past 10 years, the arithmetic usually favors replacement.
9. The system is noticeably louder than it used to be
New noises mean new mechanical wear. Grinding suggests bearings. Screeching suggests a motor. Rattling suggests something loose that will eventually damage something else.
None of these are automatically replacement signals on their own, but on an older system they tend to arrive alongside the other eight.

What to do before you buy
If you land on replacement, three things protect you:
Insist on a load calculation. Sizing should come from a Manual J calculation on your actual house, not from the size of the box being removed. Homes get remodeled, windows get replaced, and attics get insulated. The system that was right in 2008 is frequently not right today.
Have the ductwork evaluated first. A new system on leaking, undersized ducts will underperform its rating no matter how good the equipment is. Any contractor who quotes a replacement without looking at your ducts is skipping the step that determines whether you get what you paid for.
Get options, not one number. A good proposal gives you several efficiency levels with the real operating cost difference explained, plus warranty terms. A single take it or leave it price, quoted with urgency, is a sales tactic rather than an estimate.
The short version
The clearest replacement signals are a failed compressor on equipment past 10 years, an R-22 system with a leak, and two or more significant repairs inside two years. Everything else is a matter of running the numbers, and any honest contractor will show you both sides of that arithmetic rather than asking you to take their word for it.
